BANYAN - The layer of survivor

Our site located in the Ancient city, Samutprakarn. At first, Palm and I are looking for a biodiversity that contains a lot of complexity. There, we found many interesting areas, however there is one spot in ancient city that stand out from others.

The selected site is an area is located next to the canal. And from outside, look very complex with all the trees and vines surrounded.

But there is an invisible boundary that make a visitor feels that he or she was enclosed when entered into the area. And when look carefully, the complex site actually made up of only one tree, Banyan, that has many layers in itself. There are 4 layers that the Banyan tree has, which are trunks, big roots/ branches, vines, and leaves. The Banyan tree formed a weird shape due to the specific context. Also there is some parasitic plants that hold onto the Banyan tree in order to live.

When look closely into the details of this site, there are small enclosures that made up of each layers of the Banyan tree, which is interesting that many small enclosure, together, make a big enclosure.

Section plans of the site

Botanical drawing

This site consisted of 4 kinds of plant that are divided into 2 categories, which are the primary and secondary plant. The primary plant is the Banyan tree that is the main living source of this area. The secondary plant is the plant that is benefit by living on or next to the primary plant, which in this case are the Fishtail palm, the Cowslip creeper and the Areca palm.

Isometric drawing of the site atmosphere

The isometric drawing shows how the enclosure formed by looking at the overlapping shadows of each layer of the Banyan tree in three different times of the day, which are morning, noon and evening. Different colors differentiate each kind of the layer. The secondary plants were separated by using the grey color.
